Equity in Social Justice

Background

In pursuit of creating designs for all, I earned an Equity in Social Justice Design certification from The New School. A part of this certification was to develop our design manifesto and equity-in-design intervention. These courses were groundbreaking and valuable for creating more inclusive and equitable designs.

I’m sharing the results of this certification in hopes of sparking change in your work.

Design manifesto

As a designer who wants to create more equitable work, I developed this manifesto to guide my design practice. Its purpose is to keep me honest in the pursuit of leaving behind performative social justice design work or practices.

Design equity intervention

Apart from my certification program, I was asked to create a design solution for a problem I was seeing around me. I focused on providing visibility to the problem facing U.S. military spouses abroad. There is a systemic problem with the Department of Defense allowing U.S. military members and their families to move to locations abroad where the spouses may not be able to work legally. To provide awareness of this issue, I created a network to give these spouses attention, resources, and community.
